holiday card

With the holidays fast approaching, I am trying to get organized. At the top of one of my many "to do" lists is "design holiday card". This is easier said than done for a designer. I often feel like the cobbler whose children have no shoes – it's a lot of pressure to come up with something great. I'm good at designing for other people but when it comes to myself, I tend to go blank.

For last year's holiday card, I was inspired by classic silhouettes, made modern in playful ornaments. I took profile shots of my husband, the girls and myself and redrew them in Adobe Illustrator. I was quite happy with the finished result.

My goal this year is to get our card designed and printed in the next 2 weeks so I will have plenty of time to address and mail the cards by the beginning of December. I try not to wait until any later than that or I tend to get stressed out.

Happy holiday card hunting! I would love to hear what you find.

I've been thinking about holiday cards too.... Usually, my goal is to address them over Thanksgiving, which is quickly approaching. Agh!

I really love the simplicity of all the Blonde Design cards, but your winter ones are especially beautiful.

I'm just hoping to have a solid idea before Christmas for our cards... Like you, I feel the pressure to come up with something wonderful. Which is why my 2 week old still doesn't have birth announcements. (I'm just thrilled she had a Halloween costume)

Angie: I love your cards from last year! So cute! I already forgot the names of the paper websites you suggested to me where I can get that shimery, irredescent paper. Can you send it my way again? So sorry!

I really love the silhouettes of your family - what a great idea. They would make a beautiful gift at Christmas for the grandparents. I may give it a try.

Any chance you'll offer these at your shop?!

Yes, I agree--either the cards have to be ready to pop in the mail in early december or else it gets stressful & the fun is sucked out of the whole experience of sending cards.

I love your profile card!
(You should write a tutorial of how create those silhouette graphics via Illustrator!)

Wow, do I relate! I design cards for many of my family members and friends and use all of my favorite ideas on them!

I just put my design together today but I'm not psyched about it just yet. Do you ever look at your designs after you've 'finished' them and pick them apart? I'm in that mode currently :)

I love your silhouettes from last year, very sweet! I'm sure your card this year will be amazing!

Hmmm... if you haven't already brainstormed your way into a solution for this year... I'd suggest taking the silhouette idea from last year and using it again in a different way! I love seeing how children's silhouette's change from year to year and it would be a fun theme to build on for a few years.

Maybe as cookie cut-outs or lollipops, if you wanted to continue the simple circles? Or a wall backdrop with 'framed' silhouettes in a traditional setting? Or shadow people?
